What Would You Do If ...?

On Wednesdays, I throw out a question that asks, "What Would You Do If ...?" and I would love to hear - what you would do.

I will not give my answer to the What Would You Do If - Wednesday question until late in the day - after everyone has had the opportunity to offer their ideas first.

*****************************************

What Would You Do If ...

Your neighbor - a middle aged man - routinely bathed in the nude in his back yard and the only thing between you and your nudest neighbor - was a chain linked fence?

Would you just ignore the situation?

Would you approach the neighbor and address the situation?

What would you do?

I'm curious to see how you would handle this situation - to see if you would handle it the same way I would or if you are On The Flipside.

Please answer honestly. And, please go over to the sidebar and participate in the poll question on this topic.

This is what I think:

This situation happened to my mother - but it was not a chain link fence - it was a wood fence (thank goodness) between her and her male neighbor. She was still able to see in his yard and she saw this guy - once or twice a week - but, left him alone - avoided looking towards his yard when she was out back in hers.

If I had a neighbor doing this and all there was was a chained link fence - I'd give the situation a little time - see if he grew out of this nudest phase - and if he did not - I'd ask him to STOP or ask him to build a privacy fence or plant some shrubs!

If he would not stop or build a fence or plant some shrubs - I'd call the police. I wouldn't allow his desire to sun bathe nude to infringe on my rights to enjoy my back yard. I think this sort of thing does make people uncomfortable and is also a problem if there are children around. I think if someone has the desire to sun bathe nude in their yard - they should be able to do that - but ... there should be a high enough privacy fence around them so others don't have to see "it".

Poll results: What Would You Do If Your Male Neighbor Insisted On Sun Bathing Nude In His Back Yard? 13 people took poll. 4 (30%) said they would ignore the situation. 2 (15%) said they would confront the neighbor. 3 (23%) said they would call the police. 4 (30%) said they would have their husband confront the neighbor.

Well, if it were just me living all alone in my house, I wouldn't do a thing. I wouldn't care at all, and I might find myself watching him a bit too much.

HOWEVER, since I do not live alone and I have teenage daughters and a little boy, not to mention a mother in law, in the house, I would very kindly, not making a huge deal out of it, ask him to wear a bathing suit until he can put up a tall wall or really tall bushes or something.

But there's part of me thinks our society just needs to get over our whole aversion to nudity.

I'll bet I'm on the flipside. Again. :)

Point and laugh?? :)

I would probably just ask him to put up a fence or something. I'm all about "live and let live", but I wouldn't want my girls to see his stuff every time they went outside. lol

By fence I meant a privacy fence, something to block the 'view'.

hmmm... if it were just my husband and i, i would probably ignore it. however, a nude man (exhibitionist) were lying out naked knowing children would be in the backyard. i'd probably let the police take care of it!!!

I have no idea! There's gotta be a homeowner's policy that covers it for me. I have kids, for goodness' sake! I suppose I would have to say something, like ask if he could do that when the kids were in school or something like that. Now, what would YOU do?

I have an award for you on my blog.

Ok, if I lived alone... and he was young and hot.... possibly not say anything ;)
But realistically, if I had a family, with kids, I'd probably have to say something. It's not exactly... neighbour friendly to wander around your yard naked in the middle of the day when there's kids around. I think I'd ask him if he minded if we built a new fence to go with the new garden landscaping we're planning to do. Or hell, just build one an inch or two closer to my side of the property.

I'd be blushing in his place, close my eyes, go back inside (after hitting the wall because my eyes are closed) and ask my husband to put up a fence immediately!

And then I'd try to get that image out of my head.

I suppose it would depend on what said neighbor looked like---LOL!!

No, seriously, I have 2 little girls to think about now & they do like to play outside. I'd probably let my husband know & have him deal with it.

well if i did not have a kid i wouldn't care at all. really...whatever.

but since i do have a kid i would try not to make a big deal out of it and create some sort of screen or fence or something that would make him less noticable. or not seen at all.

i am loving the pic...that nekkid guy on the slide better watch out for the other nekkid guys snorkle...yowzer!!

I think I would have to say something. I would not want my kids to see that. I would also ask if he was planning a privacy fence in the near future.

i have to interject here again...
would a middle-aged man not have a little bit of a "problem" to knowingly lie in the sun nude where children (if that were the situation) could see him??? i mean wouldn't someone "normal" know better??? i mean, REALLY!!!

If it was just me, and as long as he was in his own yard, I'd just go on about my business and pay no attention to him. Unless...BWAHAHA!

But if I had kids, I'd just have a neighborly chat with him about either a privacy fence or covering up.

I voted that I'd ignore the situation but with 7 little granddaughters running around here off and on, I'd have to ask him to quell the urge to go natural when they were here. I wouldn't want them to be exposed to his rathers. And the fence would be a good idea too.

I would blog about it!

As well as give him a name! Think 'ugly naked guy'!

I forgot...

I would probably also invite my friends over to witness the 'show'.

Great cheap seat!

I would probably laugh and I'm sure we'd joke about him, but I'm in a house full of boys. I'd probably plant some bushes so we wouldn't have to see him all the time. And I'm sure my husband would say something.

However, if it was a woman, I would definitely complain and build a 12 ft wall.

Does this neighbor really exist in your neighborhood?

I would say something! I wouldn't want my kids to see his old wrinky self!

I would probably ignore the situation as far as he knew, but I'd make sure to call attention to it for others that I know. Hopefully, someone else would handle the situation and approach him so I wouldn't have to.

As a single female, like I currently am? Is he attractive? I'd probably go on with my business and just ignore it.

However, if I had kids around, I would definately ask him if we could work out some kind of "no nudity" time frame - so we could both have outside time. If he didn't want to play nicely, I'd get the local PD involved.

I'd sic my rotweiler on him (IF I had a rotweiler, how do you spell that anyway?) Seriously, I think he's a nut case so I wouldn't bother talkin' to him, I'd just put up a fence and let it go.

I think that I would get out the garden hose to water my plants ~ and oh so accidentally aim the freezing ice cold water over at him and his private parts ~ that should cool his enthusiasm for naked sunbathing a bit ~ tee hee!!

The Boyds Family said...

Okay, I'm sorry but this one is hilarious to me!!! Do you REALLY have a neighbor that does this???

I guess what I would do would depend on how good looking he is - if he's ugly, I say call The Police!! ;)

Or maybe I would take the sarcastic approach...Go into my back yard one day when he's bathing nude, light up the grill then ask him if he would like to come over for roasted weenies? :)

I would ignore him if his only sin was public nudity. It would be a good way to teach my kids that that's why there's chocolate and vanilla.

Middle age guy?!Uhhhhh....
I'd probably say something like:
«Good morning Mr.Who ever.Looks like you've forgotten to iron the suit that your mother gave you!»LOL!

I think a nude man visible to his neighbors in his backyard is demonstrating exhibitionism. I would be uncomfortable because I would wonder in what other ways he may be disordered. I would ask my husband to talk to him. If I were not married or if he continued this behavior after being asked not to, I would call the police and ask that he be charged with indecent exposure. I guess compared to the other responses I'm being pretty firm here. But hey! the guy is nude! There are kids around! Pedophilia is rampant. Besides, I don't want to have to see him like that. There's a place for nudity. It's not your backyard with no privacy fence.

bichonpawz said...

It would actually be situational. I do not have any children living with me or visiting me. So, I'd probably just ignore him. If I had children living here or visiting here...it would be a whole different story. Hey, I remember the ugly naked guy from Friends!

I'm late with my comment..again...but I guess the fact that this man knows that where he is choosing to display his privates is definitely in view of others, others that I might add are not intimate with him, tells me that he is trying to make a statement or force himself in a way on others. I've dealt with and studied just enough on pedophilia for one thing and other "issues" to feel that this man is trying to deliberately violate those around him.

I know so many of you have the mindset of "live and let live", which is kind of you and is typically my stance. However, when it involves a behavior that is not considered normal everyday activity and is something that most people are very uncomfortable with, feel violated by or fear their children will be violated by, it's not a "live and let live" situation. One with that stance, I feel, maybe just doesn't want to be accused of being intolerant.

It's entirely different if you go to a nude beach where those in attendance with you are very aware what environment they are participating in, or if your backyard is completely private.
